Cedar MacTavish’s role at the University of Toronto’s Innis College is as unique as his job title. A little more than six months ago, the aptly named U of T alumnus joined the College as its first-ever sustainability steward.

In this Q&A, Cedar (HBA’25) discusses his work, Innis’ sustainability efforts and the roots of his passion for sustainability.

What exactly is a sustainability steward?

The sustainability steward leads the development of Innis College’s sustainability strategy and portfolio. The role was created to coincide with the College embracing sustainability as a strategic priority. I’m responsible for assessing our position and impacts and supporting the design of tactics that move us toward becoming a truly sustainable college. This includes setting up and supporting student sustainability initiatives, advising on operations, and connecting the College with U of T’s broader sustainability community.

Where does your passion for sustainability come from?

My degree is in environmental geography, human geography, and history. But my passion for sustainability and urban ecology was also cultivated through the Sustainability Pathways program, where I earned a certificate in sustainability and the Sustainability Scholar credential.

What are you currently working on?

Innis College’s sustainability portfolio has several priority action areas, including waste diversion, student sustainability engagement, and energy efficiency. However, the biggest project right now is the design and implementation of a fourth-floor green roof and adjacent green terrace as a part of our current building renewal. Set to open in early 2027, it will be an open-air space for students to relax and study, surrounded by planter boxes of herbs, veggies, and flowers, with views of the College grounds and the green roof itself.

What do you enjoy the most about your role as a sustainability steward?

Innis College has a unique governance system where students are involved as equal participants in the College Council. As a result, our student community is one of the most outspoken and involved I’ve seen, and I love working in a space where student voices are prioritized. Innis is home to many wonderful young people who are actively engaged in not just the life of the College, but through sustainability, in shaping a better world.
