Late U of T Professor Frank Hooper’s seminal work on ground-source heat pumps is being built on an unprecedented scale as U of T constructs Canada’s largest urban geoexchange system at the heart of the St. George campus. This project is being built in connection with the ongoing Landmark Project and marks U of T’s transition to a climate-positive future.
The 17 Zoom Rooms @ U of T event saw 120 graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and professors find ways to incorporate the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their academic activities. Participants were assigned to one of 17 virtual “rooms” to generate ideas on how to advance the SDGs at the university and beyond. This event was inspired by the 17 Rooms Initiative launched by the Brookings Institution and the Rockefeller Foundation to stimulate innovative forms of collective action to advance the SDGs.

U of T is hosting a four-month-long Adams Sustainability Celebration from Sept. 22, 2020 to Jan. 21, 2021 to highlight recent achievements, boost engagement and inspire new sustainability ideas and initiatives. The Celebration comprises an array of events, including panel sessions, student and faculty grants and virtual booths and showcases highlighting sustainability initiatives across the university.
Adams Sustainability Champion Interns and U of T graduates, Andy Alhakim and Ana Karen Garza, are featured as “students who crushed it” for their contributions to CECCS and research on other global universities’ sustainability efforts.
CECCS outlines concrete steps to advance sustainability-related projects and initiatives across the university in the third annual report. These include the Adams Sustainability Champion Internship, earmarking new building and retrofit projects on campus as “living labs” for students and researchers, and designating professors to work with deans to integrate sustainability content into degree programs.
