U of T News: ‘Waste-to-wardrobe’ startup wins U of T’s top Adams Sustainability Innovation Prize
ALT TEX is a startup working out of UTM’s ICUBE accelerator that is developing a sustainable polyester alternative for fashion brands. ALT TEX is the first place winner of the 2020 Adams Sustainability Innovation Prize Competition, which offers $25,500 in prizes to fuel U of T startup companies that present innovative solutions to sustainability.

President Meric Gertler addresses the landmark “Investing to Address Climate Change” charter for Canadian universities in the 2020 Adams Sustainability Celebration. The charter calls on signatory universities to: incorporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into their investment practices; measure the carbon footprints of investment portfolios regularly and set meaningful targets to reduce them over time; and engage with companies to encourage them to reduce emissions.

U of T launches a new Earth Day video series to highlight some of the flagship construction projects that are poised to make significant contributions to U of T’s Low-Carbon Action Plan – which strives to cut greenhouse gas emissions across the three campuses by 37 per cent from 1990 levels by the year 2030. These tri-campus projects are all part of the university’s ambitious efforts to integrate sustainability into every facet of the institution–operations, teaching and learning, research, engagement and partnerships–as outlined in the latest CECCS annual report.
